Abstract
This research investigates groundwater quality in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. Fifty-one samples were collected from bore wells distributed across the study area. The hydrogeochemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations of groundwater samples were examined to confirm their quality and their suitability for use. The hydrogeochemical parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), Alkalinity, and Turbidity, are assessed using the Lovibond potable water quality meter, while the cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) and anions (F-, Br-, Cl-, NO2-, NO3- , PO43-, SO42-) are analyzed via ion chromatography (IC) measurement. The mean values of the hydrogeochemical parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), alkalinity, and turbidity, are 7.45±0.35, 1121±690 (µS/cm), 208.45±80 (mg/l as CaCO3), and 0.3±0.9 (NTU), respectively. The general order of abundance of cations in the groundwater of this study area is K+Cu>Pb>Cd levels in drinkable groundwater were found to be significantly lower than WHO recommended limits. Pearson correlation, factor analysis, and cluster analysis were mostly used to clarify the relationship between the groundwater samples physical, chemical, and heavy metal characteristics and the examined parameters. Water quality was evaluated by comparing the measured parameters against Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
