Abstract
Soil contamination with heavy metals led to a significant decline in quality of life and life expectancy. Polluted soil is now a prominent global concern due to rising industry, urbanization, and insufficient waste management practices. This study assessed heavy metal (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, As, Sr, and Cd) concentrations in soils of Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu using EDXRF technique. The mean concentrations of the eight metals are significantly elevated compared to the background values. The higher value of heavy metal concentration in this study may be ascribed to the influence of anthropogenic activities. The spatial map is drawn to better understand the distribution pattern of heavy metals in the study area. The ecological risk index (RI) for heavy metals is computed to assess the degree of soil contamination by different heavy metals. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) is utilized to assess the pollution degree in the research region. The distribution and correlation of heavy metals in soil along with possible remedial measures is discussed.
